Creative Ways Mexican Indigenous Women Celebrate Culture
On August 6, 2017, 160 indigenous women and girls, ages 3 to 80, participated in the twenty-fifth annual Carrera de la Tortilla by running 4.5 kilometers, barefoot or sandled, each with a canasta (basket) of tortillas on their back.
Their goal? Celebrate the ancient tradition of making, distributing/selling by foot hand-made tortillas made from white, blue, yellow and red corn.
PSYDEH and women partners find inspiration in our Puebla sisters’ example. Traditions do not need to die. This women-led, outside the box project shows us a way.
